WHO: TF 714 RW WHEN: 270039ZMAR2008 / 270042ZMAR200 WHERE: 41S PR 84767 80094 (100 AGL, HDG 180, 80 KTS) / 41S PR 84980 80130 (100ft AGL, 80 KTS, HDG 030) WHAT: At 270039ZMAR08, RW A (100ft AGL, 80 KTS, HDG 180), while preparing to land, lead A/C observed muzzle flashes aimed at A/C from the A/Cs 1 oclock position, 300-400m from A/C at 41S PR 84767 80094, 12.65 northwest of Kajaki DC, Kajaki District, Helmand Province. The crew conducted a right fishhook turn (HDG 360), placing the POO at the A/Cs 9 oclock position, in order to land at the HLZ. The left gunner acquired the POO and engaged with approximately 300-500 x 7.62mm rounds. The duration of event was approximately 30 seconds of muzzle flashes, totaling 20-30 x flashes. No tracer rounds were observed. Then at 0042Z, RW A (100ft AGL, 80 KTS, HDG 030), upon take off from the HLZ, both the lead and trail A/C observed the trail A/C receive 5-10 x tracer rounds directed at their A/C at 41S PR 84980 80130, 12.48km northwest of Kajaki DC, Kajaki District, Helmand Province. The trail A/Cs crew felt threatened and engaged 2 x individuals PID at the POO. The right trail A/C gunner engaged the POO with approximately 1000 x 7.62mm rounds. The right lead A/C gunner additionally aided in suppressing the POO. SAF ceased following engagement. The duration of event was approximately 30 seconds of continuous muzzle flashes totaling 20-30 x flashes, NFTR. CAOC Comment: These two SAFIREs are assessed as minor SAFIREs (SAF). The Information provided is consistent with SAF. These two SAFIREs are assessed as minor due to expected SAFIRE while supporting TICs on or near hostile HLZs. There has been 1 x SAFIRE within 10nm of this SAFIRE in the past 30 days. 1 x RPG against a RW A/C.
