WHO: UGLY 52 ( UK, JHF, AH-64) WHEN: 030850ZAPR08 WHERE: 41S PR 81900 57000 (1600 AGL, HDG 274, SPD 72 WHAT: At 0850z, UGLY 52 was engaged with a short burst of automatic SAF from a POO at 41S PR 81880 56770 . The rear seat pilot identified the POO from the muzzle flashes. UGLY 52 maneuvered away and the rear seat pilot engaged the POO with 40x rounds of 30mm. TF DESTINY ASSESSMENT: This is the fourth SAFIRE in the Sangin region since the beginning of the year, with the most recent of SAFIREs being on 04 FEB 08. The Helmand River Valley has continued to be our most volatile SAFIRE hotspot in Afghanistan. It is likely that SAFIREs such as this one will continue to occurr and will in fact become more frequent as activity increases through spring, summer, and into fall. THE CREW WERE NOT ON NVGs. ISRD ASSESSMENT CLOSE, MINOR, POSSIBLE SMARMS.INFORMATION PROVIDED IS CONSISTENT WITH SMARMS. ASSESSMENT IS BASED ON MUZZLE FLASH, AND CREW REPORTING.
