WHO: BOBO 43/45 (2 x CH-47), HURRICANE 26 (UH-60), DEALER 37/40 (2 x AH-64) WHEN: 080815ZAPR08 WHERE: 41R PR 6689 3616 (200 AGL, HDG 240, 90KTS) WHAT: At 080815ZAPR08, BOBO 45 ( CH-47) (HDG 240, 90KTS, 200FT AGL) received RPG fire at 41R PR 6689 3616, 9.45km southwest of FOB Robinson, Nahr Surkh District, Helmand Province. The pilots were unaware of the SAFIRE, but received word from the personnel on BOBO 43 (CH-47) along with DEALER 40 (DE 40) (AH-64) who reported seeing a puff of black smoke and an explosion. DE 40 stated that the POO was to the front left of the CH-47 as it was over flying the green zone, detonating behind BOBO45. DE 40 was unable to PID engaging forces due to heavy cover and concealment. Aircrews did not feel threatened and did not maneuver. TF EAGLE ASSAULT ASSESSMENT: This SAFIRE is assessed as an RPG Target of Opportunity (TOO). This SAFIRE shows that insurgents are willing to engage, even with 2 x AH-64s in close proximity, either demonstrating a new found resolve or belief that cover offered by the green zone was sufficient to eliminate escorting A/Cs ability to PID. There have been 2 x SAFIREs within 10NM in the last 30 days, 1 x RPG against a fixed wing aircraft, and 1 x SAF against an OH-58D, both supporting deliberate clearing of the Eastern bank of the Helmand River Valley. The area is still assessed as HIGH threat.
